Culture Shock
About the Bus
When I first took buses to get my TB test,I thought it would be not difficult. At first, I was in bus number 5,when I was about to drop-off,I realized that I have no idea how to let the driver know.So I stood up at the back door and wait until I realized that I have miss the stop. When the bus stopped at the next stop,I asked for help. A passenger pulled the door for me and finally I dropped off. Luckily, each stop is about 200 meters away,It's a short walk for me.Then I transferred to bus number 2 and started to observe. In Hawaii,if you need to drop off a bus ,you need to drag the rope to send a "stop requested" ,so the driver will stop at the next stop. Each site name will announced only once,If you don't send the information, the driver won't stop unless someone want to go on board. In China, each bus station are far away so the driver will stop at every bus stop, and the radio will inform passengers about the next station for several times,so It's hard to miss it.Because of the huge demand, you will can take several buses to the same destination within a few minutes. It would be more convenient.
By the way,The Hawaii bus touched me most is that wheelchair can move into a bus, there is room for the disabled,Bicycles can carried before the bus head……In China ,we still have a long way to go to meet all the demands.
The Coin
Until now,I still unfamiliar with the coin. When I need to pay the cash,I just take out all my coins to let the cashier to choose the right amount.
In China,we have three kind of coins. The minor coin is one dime, then five dime, one yuan(means one dollar),the more valuable, the more bigger. In American, there are four kind of coins:quarter dollar, one dime, five cents, one cent. That may seem easy to understand ,however, things are different.Firstly, quarter dollar, why not use half dollar?secondly, one dime is bigger in value but smaller in size than one cent and five cents. Finally ,we never use cent a long time ago.
Those are two kind of culture shock I have met in Hawaii, but I will get used to it in the future.
hi!
ReplyDeleteHi Yiran, I enjoyed your blog. I fell empathy with your experience because I spent hard time to get back home from Home Depo, which is hardware store nearby Costco. And I was also surprised at wheelchairs easily boarding The Bus and bicycles being kept in front of it. It's great because I seldom see people with wheelchair or bike getting on buses in Japan. The Bus is open to various kind people.

DeleteAfter all, I couldn't use my wordpress account. So now I am using my google account.
Thank you for your constant attempt and I am sorry for the inconvenient I have made. But finally, you made it! Congratulations!
DeleteI also confused by coins! The quarter is unfamiliar for me. When I arrived Hawaii, I couldn't calculate how I should pay with coins, and I always paid with dollars. So coins getting increase in my wallet... Also the size is a hassle. Why is a dime litter than 1 and 5 cents??? I couldn't tell apart them for a while. Now I put quarters and dimes together, and 1 and 5 cents together in my wallet. It's the easiest way to find the coin I want quickly, I think. There are a lot of unfamiliar thing in Hawaii!!
